Stephen: You’ve alluded several times in this interview to the role of the shaman in the cannabis ceremonies. Could you elaborate on that role some more? For example, you’ve said that in ceremony “the shamans are working to keep all that side effect side of it out of the ceremony.” That indicates that the presence and guidance of an experienced shaman is important.

Hamilton: The shaman is the guide through the ceremony. He or she guides the participants through the interaction with different plant spirits and the interaction of plant-spirit consciousness with your own consciousness. The role is key to safely navigating the healing journey. Only trained shamans know how to harness the shamanic potential of the plant in a consistent manner. The shaman is regulating which spirits are being used through the ceremony as well as the direction the ceremony will head. The responsibility is constant to provide a safe and protected space. In each ceremony there are millions of spirits that are in play. The shaman knows which ones are healing and medicine-based and invokes them accordingly into the ceremony, while at the same time keeping the dark or negative spirits out.
